It sounds...Andrew – Big mistake quoting Jefferson. It sounds pretty good out of context, but in fact, he was not talking about the Bible. Let's see more of the quote...

"I, too, have made a wee-little book from the same materials, which I call the Philosophy of Jesus; it is a paradigma of his doctrines, made by cutting the texts out of the book, and arranging them on the pages of a blank book, in a certain order of time or subject. A more beautiful or precious morsel of ethics I have never seen; it is a document in proof that I am a real Christian, that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus..."

In other words, Jefferson thought the Bible, and the traditional Christian interpretation of the Bible, were simply wrong, and felt that he had to write his own interpretation. That, not the Bible, is what Jefferson was referring to. And his comment that he was a "real" Christian was meant to convey that mainstream Christian doctrine is just plain wrong.

Nobody today would call Jefferson's beliefs "Christian."

The very web sites you cite refute your argument. From Wikipedia: "Some of the more prominent Founding Fathers were anti-clerical or vocal about their opposition to organized religion, such as Thomas Jefferson (who created the "Jefferson Bible"), and Benjamin Franklin. However, other notable founders, such as Patrick Henry, were strong proponents of traditional religion. Several of the Founding Fathers considered themselves to be deists or held beliefs very similar to that of deists." Furthermore, Wikipedia's article is based on Lambert's work, and if you dig a little more, you'll discover that according to Lambert, the Founding Fathers emphasized religious freedom. And one of Lambert's man ideas is that America is not a Christian nation, and people who try to cite history to prove otherwise are mistaken.

Go back and read my blog. I never said that many or most of the founders were not Christians. I used the phrase "wide variety" and said "Diests and a few Atheists." So what's your point?

Furthermore, you're making the very mistake that my blog is about. We are exactly what the Founding Fathers envisioned, a nation of Christians with a secular government. Arguments about the founders' religion are meaningless. Even if they were 100% Christian, they still insisted on a secular government. Is the word "Jesus" in the Constitution? No.Craig A.
