Herman Cain Happy to Usurp States on Abortion, Marriage

What ever happened to honest conservatives? You know, the ones that believed in minimal government, states rights and individual freedom?

It seems they're turning those tasks over to the liberals. When it comes to abortion, marriage, gay rights and religion, the Republicans are showing their true colors: the conservatives are one hundred percent in favor of taking away individual liberties and states' rights.

CBN (the Christian Broadcasting Network) got an exclusive interview with Herman Cain that perfectly illustrates how Republicans are advocating a federal takeover.

"Yes I feel that strongly about [a pro-life Constitutional amendment banning abortion]. If we can get the necessary support and it comes to my desk I’ll sign it. That’s all I can do. I will sign it. ... I think marriage should be protected at the federal level also. I used to believe that it could be just handled by the states but there’s a movement going on to basically take the teeth out of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act ... we do need some protection at the federal level ... I would support legislation that would say that it’s between a man and a woman.

I just don't get how Republicans can talk out of both sides of their mouths with such ease. One minute

This is too good. Why can't more people stand up to creationists, birthers and global-warming deniers? They've managed to change the rules of the game and force sensible people to debate them. They're pretending to have philosophically and scientifically sound positions that deserve to be heard. They're wasting valuable time.

The truth is they mostly deserve ridicule. Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) finally takes them down a notch. He doesn't debate, he tells it like it is. The "science" that's being presented is laughable, and Rep. Markey tells it like it is. Enjoy! It's a rare moment of sanity in Washington.

Lest anyone think I'm just as anti-science by trying to suppress debate, I'm not. I believe there's still lots of room for debate on the question of global warming. There is little room left for debate that global warming is happening and that it's caused by human activities. But there are good scientists who are still debating how much it will affect us. The rate of sea-level rise, the rate and consequences of rising temperatures and many other effects are still important questions. What I object to is how business and politics have created a well-funded campaign and fooled a lot of regular people (like the majority of the Tea Party) into taking their side. They are trying to subvert science to further their business and political goals.

Christians Twist Fairness Doctrine into Censorship

Look out, the Christian right is at it again, twisting "freedom of speech" to mean their speech only! Somehow, the Fairness Doctrine is being twisted into a sinister censorship plot against Christians. It's so ludicrous it would be funny, except that these people are serious.

The Fairness Doctrine, which started in 1949, requires broadcasters to present issues of public importance, and to present a variety of views. They can't just broadcast sports, or sitcoms, or Christian sermons, all day long. And they can't present just one side of public issues; they have to give time to opposing and divergent views. It was the price you paid for getting a monopoly to use a radio frequency: It is a public resource, so you have to serve the public's needs. Democracy would be threatened if every TV and radio station in the country was owned by a few big businesses that completely controlled what was broadcast.

The Fairness Doctrine was rescinded in 1989 by Republicans under President Regan, but now there's talk of reinstating it – and the Christians are howling. The idea of sharing their monopoly, and presenting all sides of issues of importance to this Republic, has been twisted into "censorship." That's right, if they have to present their point of view alongside opposing points of view, it's censorship.

How embarrassing for them. If these Christians, who I hope don't represent mainstream Christian views, are so afraid of a real debate, what does that say about their faith? Not much.
